I'm a new media strategist for Voce Communications, a mid-size silicon valley consultancy. At Voce, I oversee a small team of specialists focused on new media strategies and tactics for tech companies. I have architected and implemented new media programs for several brands. Currently, I'm working with Yahoo!, eBay, PlayStation, NetApp, Oracle, VeriSign, and several others on their new media programs. I'd like to think I have the experience and the perspective to really talk candidly about what it takes to use - and misuse - the social web for business.

Avoiding Disaster: How Not to Use Social Media
3:00 PM - 4:00 PM, U403
This panel will discuss how not to approach social media for people looking to promote themselves and/or their companies through blogs, forums, social networking sites and other types of communities online. We’ll highlight and discuss strategies and tactics that can damage you and your brand, such as introtisements and adverquestions (veiled advertisements), lying about your affiliations, never giving anything of value, being ignorant of your surroundings and much more. The end result will be a better understanding of how to utilize the social web to get the word out about yourself and/or your organization. We learn not only from best practices, but from poor practices. Who you want to be, directly relates to who you don’t want to be. Jason Falls is the Director of Social Media for Louisville-based brand-building agency Doe-Anderson and the author of SocialMediaExplorer.com, an AdAge 150 marketing blog.
